2017 Preview | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Gulf Shores finished the 2016 season with a disappointing 0-10 record. Last year Gulf Shores finished ninth in Class 6A region one with a 0-8 region record and failed to qualify for the playoffs. The Dolphins lost as many games as in any season since 2000. The offense struggled putting points on the score board as Gulf Shores averaged scoring just 11.8 points a game. The Dolphins also struggled on the defensive side of the football as they found little success in stopping opposing offenses and allowed an average of 39.7 points a game. The Dolphins would prefer to forget the past two seasons as they have finished with a 1-19 record. Since 2010, Gulf Shores has gone a combined 26-45. Their 37.0% winning percentage ranks 46th in Class 6A over the past seven seasons. Over the past 17 seasons, Gulf Shores has managed to compile a record of 62-109. Their 36.0% winning percentage ranks 50th in Class 6A and 309th in the AHSAA. Jamie Williams was let go at Gulf Shores after two seasons that produced a 1-19 record. Playing in a very difficult region, the Dolphins found very little success under Williams. Rick Cauley resigned in July after accepting the head coaching position at Gulf Shores. He took a job at Satsuma. Matt Blake was hired in late July to take over the football program at Gulf Shores. Blake spent the past four years as an assistant coach at Spanish Fort. He is a graduate of Lee in Montgomery and the University of Alabama. He was also the head coach at Monroe County in 2010. Coach Blake's overall record as a head football coach in one season stands at 2-8 (20.0%). The Gulf Shores Dolphins will play in Class 6A region one during the 2017 season. The Dolphins enter the 2017 season in the middle of a 12 game losing streak. They would like nothing better than to end the string of losses early in the season. This season, the Dolphins will be a long shot for one of the four playoff spots in region one. After not winning a single game last year, the goal at Gulf Shores will be to simply win some games. The defense returns Senior linebacker Jacob McDaniel who collected 3 interceptions last year. The Dolphins open the 2017 season on the road against non-region opponent Mountain Brook on Friday, August 25 at Spartan Stadium. Last year the Mountain Brook Spartans finished with an overall record of 8-3 and in second place in Class 7A region three. The Spartans lost in the first round of the Class 7A playoffs to Gadsden City by a score of 15-7. Gulf Shores and Mountain Brook have met a total of 2 times on the football field. The Dolphins have a 0-2-0 record against the Spartans. They last met in 2016 with Mountain Brook winning by a score of 56-6.
